Passport Information - know before you go...

February 1, 2008 the U.S. Department of State instituted new fees and new requirements for passport services. U.S. Passport Application Forms and Fees Changed

  • A passport is easy to obtain. Visit any AAA location for an application whether you are renewing an existing passport or if this is your first. Need branch locator link: Click here for an office location nearest you.
  • Avoid the lines. Getting your passport now avoids potential delays if you wish to travel internationally.
  • A passport is a very safe and easy form of identification for international travel.
  • A passport is valid for 10 years, so it is never too soon to apply for a new or renewed passport!

Air Travel:

Passports are required to enter or re-enter the United States from:

  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Bermuda
  • Caribbean
  • Europe

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL:

The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security's website as of January 31, 2008:

US and Canadian citizens will need:

  • WHTI-compliant document
  • OR
  • A government-issued photo ID (Driver's license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate) DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for US and Canadian children at that time.

SUMMER 2008

The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice. The proposed full requirements of the Land and Sea phase for entry or re-entry of the United States require either:

  • US Passport
  • US Passport card
  • Trusted traveler card: NEXUS, FAST, OR SENTRI
  • Valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business

Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to US citizens traveling to or returning directly from a US territory.
