With Safety and Tourism in Mind, VA to Re-Open Rest Areas
On January 20, 2010, just days after his inauguration, Governor Bob McDonnell fulfilled a campaign promise to re-open 19 rest areas along Virginia Highways that were closed for lack of funding in July 2009. AAA Mid-Atlantic commends the unanimous Commonwealth Transportation Board vote to re-open the rest stops, and the pledge by Virginia’s newly appointed Secretary of Transportation, Sean Connaughton, to seek alternative funding options for the future.
This issue has always been about motorist safety and tourism in Virginia.
AAA Mid-Atlantic has been vocal and active on this issue from its onset. AAA called for the rest areas to be reopened as soon as possible, in the media and a letter-writing campaign to elected officials. Please look through the AAA-distributed documents related to the rest area closures, including our January 20 news release.
