Maryland's New Speed Camera Law

Effective October 1, 2009, all Maryland counties and municipalities will be able to place speed cameras in highway work zones and within a half mile of any school for the purpose of issuing citations to speeders. Owners of cars clocked traveling 12 mph or more faster than the posted limit by a speed camera will be mailed a $40 citation, but accrue no points on their license.

Local jurisdictions cannot install the cameras without proper public notification and without passage of a local law authorizing placement.

AAA Mid-Atlantic wanted to ensure that the bill focused on public safety and not revenue generation and worked to have several amendments introduced that address those concerns.
